I visited the Forge, or the Foundry, as everyone called it. The Forge was a place deep inside the bowels of the Adventurers’ Guild and stretched for most of the building atop. Strangely, there was no smoke, no horrible ruckus, and no sense of urgency. At the very entrance was a large counter with two dwarves sitting behind and writing on a stack of papers. They looked almost identical with long white hair, beards, and majestic mustaches. One wore glasses that he proceeded to crush and throw away, while the other an eye patch.

“What ye want?” the one with the eyepatch asked. His one eye was glued to the stack of papers in front of him.

“I’ve got some monster corpses for processing. Is the guild interested?”

“Always,” the other, more noble-looking dwarf replied. He had an aura around him that radiated dignity. “We’ll take it.”

The other dwarf grunted once and shook his head.

“Tis a damn shame. Instead of hunting the Valtorians, they hunt monsters.”

“What was that?” I asked, placing my hands on the counter. “Did you say something, dwarf?”

“Me? Yes, I did! So what?”

“Not now! Shut up!” the other dwarf snapped, taking a freaking hammer, and hitting the other guy over the head. He dropped like a sack of meat. I stared at the other dwarf, but he just shrugged. “Never mind that. So, what ye got? No, wait, how many do ye have?”

“About a hundred,” I said flatly. “Maybe a bit more.”

“Okay. Come ‘ere.”

I eyed him as he dropped from the bar stool he was sitting on, and then almost disappeared behind the counter. His beard was braided and his eyes were dark green, which was odd for a dwarf. What surprised me most was the fine armor he wore, a shimmering gold. I figured it was damastine, as it looked very much like gold, but was incredibly sturdy.

Dwarves.

“Come, come,” he repeated and motioned for me to follow him. I did so and walked after the short fellow. We didn’t have far to go, only about fifty steps when we arrived at what looked like a meat grinder. “Place the monsters in there one by one. Slowly. The grinder will do the rest.”

“Grinder? Won’t it destroy the corpses?”

“Destroy the—by Tan’Drak! Of course not! What do ye think me for? Never mind. Don’t answer that.”

I pulled the first corpse out. It was a crystal spider that I placed on the feeder belt, which carried it into the maw of the strange-looking machine.

“Don’t want to fall in there, right? Ever had anyone—”

“Fall into the grinder? Yes, so be careful. Come on.”

He held a notepad out and started writing down the corpses I was feeding into the grinder.

“Do I need to do this with—”

“All of the corpses? Yes. Do ye—hah, no. I just wanted to see if ye were a rude one or not. Place them all on the ground and come back tomorrow. We’ll have it all sorted.”

“And a receipt?”

“The Godveil is yer receipt, human, but here, take this. Go on.”

It was as he said.
